Belgrade, Serbia - August 5 - The USA Youth Women's National Team defeated Spain 13-9 to advance to the semifinals of the FINA Youth World Championship. Jenna Flynn once again led the offense with five goals in the victory. The tournament takes a day off tomorrow before the action resumes on Sunday. Team USA opened up the first quarter with three straight goals, two of which came from Flynn, as they led 3-0 after one period. The scoring dropped off in the second quarter with just two goals scored in total as the United States held a 4-1 edge at intermission. In the third quarter the United States took control outscoring Spain 5-2. After Spain cut the deficit to 6-3 with 2:50 remaining in the quarter, Team USA ran off three straight goals. Flynn, Maggie Johnson and Julia Bonaguidi closed out the period with goals to push the United States in front at 9-3 after three periods.
In the fourth quarter the United States looked to put the match away as goals from Ella Woodhead and Bonaguidi made it an 11-4 with 6:34 to play in the fourth. Spain scored four of the next five goals to make it 12-8 with three minutes to play. Ava Stryker halted any further rally, stopping the run by Spain with a goal as Team USA went on to take the 13-9 win.
Team USA went 2/4 on power plays and 3/3 on penalties while Spain went 2/3 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
