Puerto de la Cruz, Spain - August 17 - The USA Youth Women lost to Spain 16-11 today at the World Aquatics U18 World Championships. Maggie Ryan scored three goals while goalkeeper Gianna Adams recorded five saves in the cage. Team USA will face Croatia tomorrow at 10:00am pt. Kirra Pantaleon scored the opening goal on a penalty shot before the host nation answered from in set. Spain surged ahead on a counterattack strike before Chrissy Flynn took advantage of a power play opportunity to level the score. After two Spanish goals, Emerson Mulvey got one back for the Americans to set the score at 5-3.
In the second period, Ryan scored to halve the deficit and then Charlotte Raisin put away a powerful equalizer. Ryan was there again on a player advantage for a United States lead and Mia Fabros continued the American onslaught to begin the period. Spain got one back before Ryan connected on a penalty shot for a second quarter hat trick. One more Spanish goal pulled the hosts back within one, 8-7, at the break.
Team USA used fantastic ball movement to free up Mulvey on a player advantage to start the scoring in the third quarter. The hosts leveled again with a pair of goals and then took the lead on a power play score but Pantaleon was quick to respond. Spain scored thrice more for a 13-10 edge after three quarters.
Spain began the final frame with a pair of goals before Raisin deposited her second score. From there, the Spanish got one more to secure the 16-11 win in home waters.
Team USA went 5/7 on power plays and 2/3 on penalties while Spain went 3/3 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
