Irvine, CA - USA Water Polo legend Tony Azevedo has been elected to the Panam Sports Athlete Commission. He is one of the five new elected members of the commission. More votes were cast than at any previous Pan Am Games in history, with a total of 1,838 athletes choosing their top-five choices out of the 13 candidates who were nominated by their respective National Olympic Committees.
The five new members of the Panam Sports Athlete Commission are:
Isabel Swan (Brazil - Sailing)
Melissa Humana-Paredes (Canada - Beach Volleyball)
Paola Longoria (Mexico - Racquetball)
Tony Azevedo (USA - Water Polo)
Amber Joseph (Barbados - Cycling)
These new members join Carlos Santiago (Puerto Rico - Judo), Adriana Escobar (El Salvador - Rowing) and Aliann Pompey (Guyana - Athletics) on the Panam Sports Athlete Commission who will continue to serve until the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. The newly elected members will serve eight-year terms.
Azevedo is the all-time leading scorer in FINA World Championship history and has helped lead Team USA to five Pan-American Games gold medals and two FINA World League Super Final silver medals. On the college side he competed for Stanford University where he was named Pac-12 Conference Men's Water Polo Player of the Century. Following his time at Stanford Azevedo he began his professional water polo career which saw him compete for several of the top clubs in the world including: CAN Bissolati (Italy), J.K. Primorac (Montenegro), VK Jug Dubrovnik (Croatia), Fluminense (Brazil) and most recently Sesi (Brazil). Meanwhile back at home he's been starring for the New York Athletic Club, helping the team to multiple National Championships.
