USA Women Fall To Spain 17-15 In Shootout On Day Two Of World Cup Qualification

Jenna Flynn scored four goals in the loss to Spain
Rotterdam, Netherlands - May 2 - The USA Women's National Team lost a tight battle to Spain on day two of World Cup Division 1 qualification in the Netherlands, falling 17-15 in a shootout. Jenna Flynn had four goals to pace the USA attack with Amanda Longan and Isabel Williams combining for five saves in net. Team USA finishes group play tomorrow against Japan at 5:00am pt with a victory assuring Team USA of a top four spot and qualification to the World Cup final in July. Live streaming is available on the World Aquatics website and live statistics is available on Microplus Timing Services.

In this match, the longtime rivals traded goals in the opening period before Lucy Haaland-Ford put Team USA up one on a power play strike, building a 3-2 lead heading to the second period. It was more of the same in the second period as Spain scored the first two goals in the quarter to go in front 5-4. Jordan Raney tied the game at 7-7 with time winding down in the half but Spain had the final word with three seconds left to take a one goal edge into halftime.

Spain went in front 10-8 in the third quarter before Team USA started to chip away behind a counter attack from Ava Stryker and a power play goal from Flynn for a 10-10 game after three periods. Paige Hauschild gave Team USA a 12-11 lead on a player advantage goal halfway through the fourth quarter but that lead wouldn't hold. Spain evened the match on a penaly shot strike with a little more than two minutes to play in the game and that would be all the offense in regulation as the match moved to a shootout.

The two sides were even through the first round of the shootout but in the second round Jovana Sekulic saw her shot blocked allowing Spain to hold a one goal lead. The two sides stayed perfect the rest of the way but once Spain converted in the fifth and final round, their lead became insurmountable as they took the two goal victory.

In regulation Team USA went 3/7 on power plays and 1/3 on penalties while Spain went 3/5 on power plays and 2/2 on penalties.
