Irvine, CA - August 21 - The USA Women beat New Zealand 14-9 tonight in Irvine. Jewel Roemer scored three goals to lead the offense and goalkeepers Isabel Williams and Christine Carpenter combined for 13 saves in the cage. Team USA will conclude the summer home series with another matchup against Australia on Sunday, August 23 at 1pm pt. The match will stream live on Overnght with live stats available from 6-8 Sports.
New Zealand began with the game's first goal and then Rachel Fattal converted on a penalty attempt before Julia Bonaguidi and Rosalie Hassett gave the United States an early lead. A New Zealand goal from five meters left the score at 3-2 after one quarter.
In the second, Jordan Raney struck first to the top right corner of the net prior to one from the visitors. Roemer connected on her first on a power play but another New Zealand goal followed from five meters. Ava Stryker got on the board next before another penalty shot goal for the visitors. Raney put her second goal of the period away in another perfect spot and Fattal converted on another five meter try before Roemer scored on a sidearm shot. New Zealand beat the halftime buzzer for a 9-6 score at the break.
Ella Woodhead pushed the American total to double digits to begin the second half before Stryker and Roemer added to the advantage. New Zealand got one back but Tara Prentice quickly continued the scoring onslaught for Team USA who led 13-7 headed to the final frame.
About one minute into the fourth quarter, New Zealand scored its eighth but Emma Lineback responded by going bar down for a goal. From there, New Zealand scored the final goal of the game but could not catch the Americans who claimed the 14-9 victory.
Team USA went 5/12 on power plays and 2/4 on penalties while New Zealand went 3/10 on power plays and 3/3 on penalties.
