Alexandroupolis, Greece - January 19 - The USA Women closed out play at the World Cup Division 1 qualifier with a 10-6 loss to Hungary earlier today. Chrissy Flynn led the offensive charge with three goals while Isabel Williams recorded 12 saves in net. Hungary struck first to open the match but Team USA returned fire with three straight scores.
Tara Prentice hit on a power play goal followed by Flynn connecting for a penalty shot at the four-minute mark. With under two minutes to play in the quarter, Allison Cohen converted for a 3-1 edge. Hungary got one back late in the period to make it a 3-2 match after one period. Hungary tied the game early in the second quarter but Malia Allen and Flynn answered with back-to-back goals for a 5-3 lead halfway through the period. Hungary got one back moments later but Team USA held the 5-4 edge going into halftime.
The tide changed in a major way in the third quarter as Hungary took control of the match. Hungary tied the score early in the period as part of four unanswered goals in the period to surge in front 8-5. Hungary kept it going early in the fourth to lead 9-5. Flynn finally ended the scoring drought, hitting the only goal in the second half for Team USA as they got back within three at 9-6. It was too late in the action to make a different and Hungary scored on their next possession to secure the four goal win.
Team USA struggled on the advantage going 1/8 on power plays and 2/3 on penalties while Hungary went 3/10 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
