USA Women Lose To Hungary 10-8 In Final Home Game Before Olympics

Berkeley, CA - July 9 - The USA Women lost to Hungary 10-8 tonight at Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley. Rachel Fattal, Maddie Musselman, and Jewel Roemer all scored twice for Team USA and Ashleigh Johnson recorded 10 saves in the cage.

The visitors had a dream start to this game, holding Team USA's high-powered offense without a goal in the first quarter while Rita Keszthelyi and Kamilla Farago (2) both scored for a 3-0 lead after one. Midway through the second period, Hungary widened the lead as Farago notched an early hat trick. Kaleigh Gilchrist would get the United States on the board with 2:32 to play in the half. Rebecca Parkes answered for the Hungarians before Musselman took advantage on a power play to set the halftime score at 5-2 in favor of the away team.

Roemer opened the third quarter with a goal to pull Team USA within two. Farago continued her big scoring night with a player advantage goal and then Musselman did the same for the Americans. Two minutes later, Greta Gurisatti found the back of the net for Hungary followed by Jenna Flynn for the United States who trailed 7-5 headed to the final frame. In the fourth, the two sides traded goals three separate times. First, Parkes and Fattal went back-and-forth. Then, Keszthelyi and Fattal exchanged goals. Finally, Krisztina Garda and Roemer swapped scores to set the final score at 10-8 for Hungary.

The United States went 4/11 on player advantages while Hungary was 1/3. Neither side attempted a penalty shot.
