Atherton, CA - June 30 - The USA Men's National Team fell to Spain 13-10 Sunday afternoon at Sacred Heart Prep.
Ryder Dodd recorded a hat trick for Team USAÂ while
Adrian Weinberg notched 6Â saves in net.
Team USA struck first when
Hannes Daube fired one home from long distance to start the contest. Spain would answer with Alvaro Granados converting a penalty shot before Alex Bustos gave the visitors their first lead.
Ben Hallock scored his first of the day on a power play to level the score but Roger Tahull responded on its ensuing possession. Midway through the opening quarter,
Ryder Dodd sent one into the back of the net from five meters but Alberto Munarriz closed the quarter with a pair of goals to give Spain a 5-3 edge after one.
In the second,
Max Irving came out firing and scored first for Team USA followed by
Luca Cupido to bring things even at 5-5. Late in the period,
Ryder Dodd took advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity to retake the lead. With :40 seconds remaining in the half, Bernat Sanahuja scored for Spain and the two sides were all square at 6-6 going to the break.
Just over one minute into the third, Spain got the first of the quarter to go from Sanahuja but
Johnny Hooper would answer for the home team on the power play. From there, Sergi Cabanas and Hallock exchanged man-advantage goals before Unai Biel andÂ
Ryder Dodd did the same as the squads remained neck and neck. Biel would break the tie late in the quarter and Spain held a 10-9 lead heading to the fourth.
In the final frame, Irving earned a penalty and Hooper knocked it down to level things once again but Spain would wrestle away control of this game down the stretch. Blai Mallarach, Munarriz, and Bustos all scored for the Europeans while Eduardo Lorrio came up with big saves to secure the win, 13-10.
The United States went 5/10 on power plays and 2/2 on penalties while Spain went 3/8 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
