Ibague, Colombia - November 21 - The U.S. Women's Senior National Team defeated Mexico 27-3 today at the 2024 PanAm Water Polo Championships. Emily Ausmus scored five goals for the Americans and goalkeeper Lauren Steele racked up four saves in net. Team USA faces the host nation of Colombia tomorrow in Ibague at 12:00pm et/9:00am pt.
The United States jumped all over Mexico from the opening sprint and never looked back. Ausmus got things started one minute in followed by Rosalie Hassett, Jovana Sekulic, Ausmus two more times, Quinn Healy, and Charlotte Raisin all finding the back of the net before Veralie Fanay finally scored for Mexico to send this game into the second quarter with a 7-1 lead for Team USA.
In the second period, the Americans continued an impressive offensive display. Sekulic, Ausmus (2), Ava Stryker, and Emma Lineback pushed the lead to double digits ahead of Fanay's second score for Mexico. Raisin, Healy, Julia Bonaguidi, and Tara Prentice ended the half with four straight goals for a 16-2 halftime edge.
After the break was more of the same from Team USA in this one. Rachel Gazzaniga (2) and Allison Cohen scored early for the United States prior to Mexico's last goal from Nasla Godinez. From there, Bonaguidi, Healy, Prentice, and Sekulic padded the lead at 23-3 headed to the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, the Americans put the game away with four goals from Stryker, Lucy Haaland-Ford (2), and Raisin to secure a dominant 27-3 win.
The United States went 0/2 on player advantages and 1/1 on penalties attempted while Mexico went 0/7 on player advantages with no penalties attempted.
