USA Men Defeat South Africa 24-2 at FINA World Championships to Move Onto Quarterfinals

Chase Dodd piled up six goals in the win over South Africa
Budapest, Hungary - June 27 - The USA Men's National Team won in the crossover round at the FINA World Championships with a 24-2 victory over South Africa earlier today. Chase Dodd scored six times to lead the team with Marko Vavic adding four scores on the day. Adrian Weinberg and Drew Holland split time in cage combining for 12 stops as Weinberg halted every shot he faced. Team USA now advances to the quarterfinals where they will meet Greece on Wednesday at 7am et/4am pt. Live streaming is available via the FINA YouTube page by clicking here. Team USA came out of the opening sprint strong in the first quarter. Dylan Woodhead scored 40 seconds into the game and added another on a man-up advantage late in the quarter on the way to a 6-0 lead after one. The second quarter brought more of the same from Team USA. Dodd found the back of the net three times in the period as the Americans recorded another 6-0 frame to lead 12-0 at the halftime break.

Team USA ended any doubt to the result in the third quarter as Ben Stevenson, Ben Hallock, Hannes Daube, Dodd, and Vavic all added onto the tally while the defense kept South Africa at bay again, resulting in a 17-0 advantage headed to the fourth. In the final frame, Team USA tacked on five more goals before South Africa finally broke through. With the score at 22-0 and 2:52 remaining in the contest, Jonathan Wayne Swanepoel fired in South Africa's first score. Just over a minute later, Ross Stuart Stone found the back of the net for South Africa on a counter attack before Stevenson and Matt Farmer put the finishing touches on the 24-2 win.

Team USA finished 7/8 on power plays and 1/1 on penalty shots while South Africa went 0/2 on power plays with no penalty shots attempted.
