Long Beach, CA - December 21 - The USA Women's National Team beat Spain at Long Beach City College earlier today, 11-10.
Jewel Roemer and Jenna Flynn both scored three goals for the United States while
Ashleigh Johnson recorded nine saves in net.
This game was a tight contest throughout. In the opening period, Spain got on the board first with a goal from Judith Forca less than 30 seconds into the game. Elena Ruiz, Maica Garcia, and Ariadna Ruiz added goals for Spain in the quarter. Team USA took advantage of three power plays for three goals by Emma Lineback,
Rachel Fattal, and
Ryann Neushul as Spain led 4-3 after one. In the second period, Forca found the back of the net within 30 seconds of the opening sprint once again for Spain who also got a goal from Nona Perez in the quarter.
Ava Johnson, Roemer, and Flynn got on the scoreboard in the period for the United States to level the score at 6-6 at the break.
The third quarter saw three goals from each country, beginning with Anna Espar and Forca for the Spainards to take a two-goal lead.
Tara Prentice and Flynn responded for Team USA to tie the score again before Ruiz and Flynn traded scores to close the period at 9-9. In the final frame, Forca netted another for Spain to take back the lead before Roemer tied the game on a player advantage for the United States. With 1:35 to play, Roemer stepped up again and buried a skipshot from the left side for the game-winning goal as Team USA claimed victory, 11-10.
The United States went 9/14 on power plays and 1/2 on penalties while Spain went 3/7 on power plays and 1/2 on penalties.
