Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain - November 6 - The USA Women's National Team outlasted the Netherlands in a shootout, 16-15, at the FINA World League Super Final earlier today to claim Bronze.
Jordan Raney scored five times to lead the offense while
Ashleigh Johnson recorded 14 saves in the win.
Team USA and the Netherlands came out of the gates even as the score was 3-3 after the first period with goals from
Denise Mammolito,
Ryann Neushul, and Jenna Flynn. In the second quarter, the United States stormed ahead with four goals scored by Raney,
Jewel Roemer,
Tara Prentice, and
Bayley Weber while the Netherlands got one goal off a penalty shot from Lola Moolhuijzen and the Americans held a 7-4 halftime advantage. After the break, the Dutch put home three straight goals to tie the score before Raney converted on a pair for Team USA, making the score 9-7 going into the fourth period. In the fourth quarter, the Netherlands erased the difference once again when three more goals to open play gave them a one-goal advantage (10-9). Raney and
Rachel Fattal scored down the stretch opposite another from the Dutch to send this game to a shootout. In the decisive shootout, Neushul, Flynn, Roemer, Fattal, and Raney all converted from 5m while Johnson made the save Team USA needed on the Netherlands' second attempt from Marit Van Der Weijden, giving the Americans the 16-15 win and a Bronze medal.
The United States went 5/9 on power plays and 6/1 on penalties while the Netherlands went 4/8 on power plays and 6/2 on penalties.
