Manresa, Spain - June 9 - The USA Women's National Team opened up their first trip abroad in over a year with a narrow 13-12 victory over Catalonia earlier today in Spain.
Maddie Musselman led the USA attack with five goals while
Ashleigh Johnson recorded 14 saves in net. The match is part of a week of common training in Spain ahead of the FINA World League Super Final that begins on June 14 in Athens, Greece.Â
Team USA jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first quarter and built a 9-4 advantage by halftime. The offense slowed a bit in the third quarter as Catalonia held Team USA to just two goals while adding one of their own, leaving the score at 11-5 USA going to the fourth. Catalonia looked to mount a massive rally in the fourth as they exploded for seven goals while holding Team USA to just two scores. The comeback would fall just short as Team USA held on for the one goal win.
Team USA went 6/10 on power plays and 2/2 on penalties while Catalonia went 7/10 on power plays and 3/3 on penalty shots.
