USA Men Defeat Canada 13-11 On Day Two At Pan American Games

Team USA gets fired up before their match against Canada at the Pan Am Games
Lima, Peru - August 5 - The USA Men's National Team moved to 2-0 in group play with a key 13-11 victory over Canada on day two of competition at the Pan American Games. Johnny Hooper (Los Angeles, CA/California/LA Premier) scored five goals and Alex Wolf (Huntington Beach, CA/UCLA/Bruin) made 12 stops in net in the win. Team USA closes out group play on Tuesday when they meet Venezuela at 6pm local time/4pm pacific. No live streaming is available but fans can follow @USAWP on Twitter for live match updates. 

Ben Hallock (Westlake Village, CA/Stanford/LA Premier) opened the scoring for Team USA with a power play goal for a 1-0 lead. Canada countered moments later scoring three in a row to take an early 3-1 lead with 3:45 to play in the first. Team USA battled back scoring three straight to end the period, including two from Max Irving (Long Beach, CA/UCLA/Bruin) to take a 4-3 lead after the first quarter. 

Both offenses cooled off in the second quarter as just two combined goals were scored. After Canada tied the match with 3:29 left in the half, Hooper came back with a score for a 5-4 lead at halftime. From a low-scoring second quarter the match moved to a high-scoring third with 10 combined goals. Team USA scored five of the first six goals to begin the quarter, including two from Hooper, to surge ahead 10-5 with 2:58 left in the quarter. Canada wasn't done yet as they responded with three of the next four goals to make it an 11-8 match in favor of Team USA after three quarters. 

After Canada drew to within two at 11-9 early in the fourth, Hooper came back with another goal to give Team USA a three-goal cushion at 12-9. Canada made one last push to get within a goal at 12-11 with 2:34 left but Hooper quieted the rally converting on a penalty shot for a 13-11 lead on the way to the victory. 

Team USA went 8/14 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties while Canada was 4/9 on power plays and 1/1 on penalties.
