USA Men Will Play For Gold At World University Games After Downing Hungary

Naples, Italy - July 14 - The USA Men's National Team will play for gold at the 2019 World University Games after defeating Hungary 12-9 in semifinal action. Jake Cavano and Quinn Woodhead scored three goals each in the victory as Team USA used a 3-1 advantage in the fourth quarter to earn a spot in the gold medal final. The win assures Team USA of a medal for the first time since 2015 when UCLA (competing as Team USA) earned bronze. They'll be looking for their first gold medal in the event since winning back-to-back titles in 1991 and 1993. In the final Team USA will meet Italy on Sunday at 7am et/4am pt. Hungary led early on building a 3-1 lead at one point in the first quarter and a 6-3 lead in the second quarter. Team USA battled back as Cavano scored with under three minutes to play in the first half to make it 6-5. Hungary would lead by two at halftime and then lead 8-6 in the third quarter. The United States rallied once again, this time tying the match at 8-8 behind goals from Bennett Williams and Tyler Abramson. 

The offensive surge continued in the fourth quarter as Jake Ehrhardt and Woodhead scored to build a 10-8 lead. Hungary closed to within a goal at 10-9 with under three minutes to play but Woodhead closed the door on any future comeback with two more goals to cap the three goal victory.
