Cegled, Hungary - June 27 - The USA Women's Senior National Team fell to Hungary 10-9 in an exhibition match played yesterday in Hungary. Kiley Neushul (Goleta, CA/Stanford/SBWPF) scored four goals in the loss while Ashleigh Johnson (Miami, FL/Princeton/Gulliver Riptides) posted nine saves in net. The match was part of a common training session with the Hungarian National Team in advance of the Kirishi Cup starting on July 1 in Kirishi, Russia. Hungary got off to a strong start posting a 3-0 lead after the first period. Team USA battled back with a 4-1 second period to even the match at 4-4 at halftime. The two teams were even in the third period with both sides scoring two goals leaving the match even at 6-6 going to the fourth period. In the final quarter Hungary was one goal better than Team USA pulling out the 10-9 victory.
The United States went 5/12 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty while Hungary was 4/8 on power plays and 1/2 on penalties. Team USA opens the Kirishi Cup with Hungary on July 1 in Russia. Athletes from goalkeeper Ashleigh Johnson's high school water polo team, Ransom Everglades, were on hand to cheer on Team USA and meet with the National Team after the match.
