Commerce, CA Wins Girls Division, Orange County, CA Takes Boys Division As Speedo Cup Comes To Close

RESULTS

Ann Arbor, MI - November 9 - It was a repeat championship for the girls from Commerce, California as they took home the 2008 Speedo Cup title with a 10-5 defeat of Santa Barbara earlier today at the Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan. On the boys side Orange County, CA was victorious in the title game over Oakland, CA 10-2. For Orange County it was a reprieve after falling in the championship game a year ago in Columbia, Missouri.

As for the rest of the girls bracket in the third place game Newport Beach which returned to the tournament after a long drought edged Laguna Beach 5-4. In the fifth place game San Diego, CA defeated Stanford, CA 7-5 while Danville, CA was victorious over Greenwich, CT 9-4 in the seventh place game. For ninth place Miami, FL was the team with Chicago, IL taking tenth, Ann Arbor, MI 11th, and La Jolla, CA 12th.

In the boys bracket Los Alamitos, CA nipped Orinda, CA by a pair winning 4-2 to grab third place. In the fifth place match Pasadena, CA was three goals better than San Diego, CA pulling away 6-3 for the win. In seventh place the squad from Glendale, CA knocked off Carlsbad, CA 6-3 while in ninth place Greenwich, CT upended Fort Lauderdale, FL 7-3. Rounding out the standings were Chicago, IL and Ann Arbor, MI.

The Speedo Cup also annually distributes awards on both the girls and boys sides recognizing one player from each team. The boys awards are named after Jody Campbell and the girls awards are named after Maureen O'Toole.
