What was the moment you knew you wanted to represent your country in the Olympic Games? Was it always in the sport of water polo?
I fell in love with water polo when I was 6 and watched my older sister’s high school games. She was a goalie, so I wanted to be just like her! The specific moment I knew I wanted to make the Olympic roster occurred during one of my middle school tournaments. After one game, my coach told me that I could be an Olympian if I showed enough determination. It’s amazing what mentors can do for a young player’s goals. From that moment on I committed myself to working each day to represent the USA at the Olympics.
What is your hidden talent?
I’m a great napper.
What is your favorite karaoke song?
“Torn” by Natalie Imbruglia.
If you could compete in another sport during the Olympic Games what would it be and why?
Volleyball. I always have a great time playing with friends or teammates, and I love the beach!
What is one thing you have to have with you when you travel?
My neck pillow; I can’t sleep without it on international flights!
Biggest superstition if you have one?
I don’t have any superstitions, but I do hold some special stones that were given to me by my high school/club coach (Doug Peabody) when I get nervous before games.
What is your biggest fear?
Heights! I’ll burst into immediate tears if I go on a Ferris wheel or windowed elevator.
What causes are most dear to your heart?
I’m passionate about social, institutional, and political equality. I wrote my master’s thesis on the relationship between feminism and athletics, focusing on Billie Jean King’s 1973 “Battle of the Sexes” tennis match. I plan to attend law school to follow this passion.
What are two truths and a lie about you?
I toilet trained my cat.
I’m a great dancer.
I’m afraid of butterflies.
Do you have a nickname? How did you get it?
No special nicknames, but my friends/teammates usually call me “Gabs.”
What song would be included on your life's soundtrack?
“Vienna” by Billy Joel.
What advice would you give your younger self and what would you remind your older self?
Don’t forget to have fun! The longer we play water polo the more it seems like a job, so remember to relax and enjoy playing the game with your teammates
