Hallock And Weinberg In World's Elite As USA Continues To Shape Global Water Polo

Team USA captain Ben Hallock (back middle) and goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg (front middle) have each been recognized in the 2024 Total Player Award voting process
American water polo's resurgence reached new heights in 2024, with Team USA captain Ben Hallock earning a prestigious spot in the Total 7 lineup and goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg's breakthrough season landing him in the global Top 10. Their performances were instrumental in securing Team USA's first Olympic men's medal since 2008, highlighting America's growing influence across both genders in the sport's elite circles.

The expert panel of 49 judges (coaches, captains, and journalists) awarded Hallock 72 points, validating his evolution into the world's best center forward. His impact extends beyond the national team, with his dominance at Pro Recco setting new standards for the position. Weinberg's emergence (17 points) establishes him among the world's elite goalkeepers, demonstrating the United States' ability to develop world-class talent at crucial positions.

Legacy of Excellence

The American program has consistently produced Total Player Award winners, particularly in women's competition. Ashleigh Johnson broke barriers in 2019 as the first goalkeeper to claim the award, while Maddie Musselman Woepse achieved the unprecedented feat of back-to-back victories in 2021 and 2022. Maggie Steffens, one of the most decorated players in water polo history, continues this tradition with her inclusion in this year's best team on the driver position (26 points), proving USA's sustained excellence in developing elite talent.

Strategic Evolution

Hallock's journey exemplifies modern water polo's global nature. His technical mastery at the center forward position, refined through experience with Pro Recco, combines European tactical sophistication with American athletic prowess. The Olympic bronze medal campaign showcased this evolution, with Hallock's presence forcing tactical adjustments from traditional water polo powerhouses.

This year's Total 7 places Hallock alongside Serbia's Dušan Mandic (2024 Total Player winner with 243 points, adding to his 2021 title), Croatia's outstanding duo Marko Bijac and Loren Fatovic, and fellow elites Nikola Jakšic, Alvaro Granados, and Nikola Dedovic. In the women's competition, Spain's Bea Ortiz claimed her nation's first female Total Player award with 124 points, while Steffens maintains the American presence among the world's best.

What is the Total Player Award?

Total Player Award, established in 2017, represents the pinnacle of individual recognition in international water polo. This award goes beyond standard seasonal awards, combining votes from water polo experts - coaches, captains, and journalists - in a unique assessment of excellence. The voting system is fully transparent and ensures expertise in selection. Each jury member must select the ideal season seven (Total 7) and name the best player. Each year, the best individuals and teams are chosen in both men's and women's categories.

Previous winners in 2017: Sandro Sukno (Croatia), 2018: Felipe Perrone (Spain) and Ekaterina Prokofyeva (Russia), 2019: Denes Varga (Hungary) and Ashleigh Johnson (USA), 2020: Tibor Benedek (Hungary) and Maggie Steffens (USA) - due to COVID-19, best players of 21st century were chosen, 2021: Dušan Mandic (Serbia) and Maddie Musselman Woepse (USA), 2022: Francesco Di Fulvio (Italy) and Maddie Musselman Woepse (USA), 2023: Gergo Zalanki (Hungary) and Simone van de Kraats (Netherlands), 2024: Dušan Mandic (Serbia) and Bea Ortiz (Spain).
