Athens, Greece - April 19 - The U.S. Women's Senior National Team resumed play at the 2023 World Aquatics World Cup qualifier today with a 10-8 win over Hungary. Amanda Longan was named Player of the Game with ten saves in net while Maddie Musselman, Julia Bonaguidi, Emily Ausmus, and Jordan Raney all scored twice for the United States. Hungary struck first to open the game when Rebecca Parkes fired one in thirty seconds after the opening sprint. Two minutes later, Musselman equalized for Team USA. Later in the first period, Greta Gurisatti converted an extra player goal for Hungary but the Americans answered with two scores on power plays from Musselman and Raney to close the quarter up 3-2.
In the second, Bonaguidi doubled the United States' advantage in the first minute. Nearly two minutes later, Gurisatti buried a penalty shot to take advantage of the lone penalty foul in the game against Bonaguidi. An immediate response followed for Bonaguidi however as she converted an extra player shot for a 5-3 halftime advantage.
The Hungarians won possession to start the third period and earned a power play opportunity but Vanda Valyi was denied by Longan. On the other end, Team USA earned an exclusion and captain Maggie Steffens knew what to do with it as she deposited her only goal of the contest into the back of the net. From there, Hungary strung together some momentum in the middle of the quarter. Panna Tiba, Valyi, and Dora Leimeter drilled three in a row to tie the score. With one minute to play in the quarter, Ausmus gave the Americans a 7-6 lead headed to the final frame.
Tara Prentice and Raney started the scoring in the fourth quarter to widen the lead for the United States. Then, Dorottya Szilagyi had a power play shot and a 6m shot saved by Longan, who continued to control the game from the cage. Gurisatti finally scored for Hungary with 2:16 remaining but Ausmus had an answer on the next possession. With time winding down, Leimeter scored to set the final score at 10-8 in favor of Team USA.
