Indianapolis, IN - July 12 - The second day of the 2022 Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships has arrived at the Indiana University Natatorium! Follow along for updates throughout the day.
Team USA
Final: USA 20, Argentina 3.
The U.S. Men's Youth National Team moved to 2-0 at the 2022 Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships with a 20-3 victory over Argentina.
John Burghardt led Team USA with five goals scored while
Riley Clansen notched eight saves in net.
Team USA opened the scoring early with a power play goal by
Evan Ausmus, followed byÂ
Benjamin Liechty (2),Â
Jacob Tsotadze, and
Ryder Dodd all finding the back of the net. Francisco Miguel Rueda Nessi converted on a man-up advantage for Argentina's lone goal of the quarter as the United States led 5-1 after the first quarter.Â
Peter Castillo and Burghardt netted goals for Team USA to begin the second quarter before Nicolas Lavezzo converted a man-up advantage for Argentina. Dodd (2), Tsotadze, Ausmus, and Castillo (2) continued the barrage from the Americans to increase the lead to 13-2 heading into the halftime break.
In the third quarter, Team USA brought the defense. Argentina went without a goal while Burghardt andÂ
Gage Verdegaal put home goals to make it 15-2 in favor of the United States after three quarters. The Americans powered through the finish line in the fourth quarter, outscoring Argentina 5-1 behind Burghardt (3) and Verdegaal (2) to emerge victorious, 20-3.
Final: USA 28, Chile 2.
The U.S. Women's Youth National Team won again at the 2022 Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships, defeating Chile 28-2. Julia Bonaguidi led Team USA with five goals scored while Margaret Johnson and Becca Melanson each added four of their own.
Team USA started play locked in on the defensive end, allowing zero goals and holding Chile without a true chance at scoring in the opening quarter. Johnson scored four times and Bonaguidi added three as Allison Cohen, Ella Woodhead, and Melanson chipped in to give the Americans a 10-0 lead after one. Bonaguidi, Julianne Snyder, and Quinn Healy added to the USA lead before Barbara Gutierrez finally put Chile on the board with a beautiful lob over the defense. Amber Nowaczek (2), Snyder, and Rachel Gazzaniga all scored for the Americans to finish the first half up 17-1.
In the third period, Team USA left no doubt as to the result of this one. Bonaguidi, Ava Stryker, Gazzaniga, Healy, Melanson (2), Maggie Hawkins, and Woodhead found the back of the net for the United States while Chile managed one goal from Constanza Beltran to make the score 25-2 headed to the fourth quarter. In the final frame, the Americans got goals from Hawkins, Woodhead, and Melanson while holding Chile scoreless to win the game by a 28-2 final score.
Other Men's Games
Final: Brazil 21, Canada 8.
The Brazilian men looked fresh after a bye on Day 1 of the 2022 Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships, defeating Canada 21-8. Frederico Carsalade led the way for Brazil with five goals while Diogo Checchinato recorded 10 saves in the cage.
Brazil utilized a balanced scoring effort and lockdown defense to lead from start to finish. The South Americans jumped out to a 7-0 lead before Alexander James got Canada on the board late in the first quarter. The second quarter saw just four total goals scored - Artur Diaz, Oliver Sudar, and Paulo Ricardo Oliveira found the back of the net for Brazil while Cameron Hexter converted a man-up advantage for Canada, making the halftime score 11-2 in favor of Brazil.
The Canadians got the offense going in the third quarter, scoring four times, but the Brazilians poured in seven of their own. Oliveira, Carsalade (2), Joao Pedro Domeneghetti, Diaz, Sudar, and Joao Vitor Jaime widened Brazil's lead to twelve entering the fourth quarter. In the final frame, Brazil put up three goals while Canada added two to make the final 21-8 for the Brazilians.
Other Women's Games
Final: Argentina 14, Canada 13.
Argentina survived a close game with Canada throughout all four quarters, prevailing 14-13 on Day 2 of the 2022 Pan American Junior Water Polo Championships. Lucía Victoria Ruíz Castellani scored four times for Argentina while Lola Canales recorded eight saves in net in the win.
The Canadian women opened the game with a player advantage goal by Serena Browne to make it 1-0, Canada. The Argentinian women responded with two goals by Maylen Sampedro Tarela and Isabella Mastronardi Belpoliti to take the lead, 2-1. The sides traded goals to finish the quarter - Emma Lawson for Canada and Anahí Bacigalupo for Argentina - as Argentina held a 3-2 lead after the first. Argentina extended the lead to begin the second quarter with penalty shots from Ruíz Castellani and Maylen Sampedro Tarela. Canada answered with four straight goals, including back-to-back by Alexandra Hlohovsky Andrist, to retake the lead. Ruíz Castellani closed the half with a penalty shot for Argentina to level the score at 6-6 headed into the halftime break.
Argentina came out of the halftime break firing away and netted five goals in the third period. Ana Jazmín Agnesina, Sampedro Tarela, Bacigalupo, and Ruíz Castellani (2) all found the back of the net opposite just two goals for Canada in the quarter from Alicia Petkov and Browne, making the score 11-8 in favor of Argentina headed to the final frame. Canada would not go down quietly in the fourth quarter. Browne (2), Katherine Featherstone, and Petkov (2) made it interesting but Canada could not bring the score level, ultimately losing 14-13 via Agostina Cataldo's game deciding goal for Argentina with under two minutes to play.
