Team USA began the game slowly on offense. Bowen scored the only goal for the Americans in the first eight minutes halfway through the opening quarter as the Greeks took an early 3-1 lead. The second period brought much more offense for Team USA as Gruwell and Dodd both scored to open the quarter. Daube scored twice, buoyed by Hallock and Bowen both converting man-up advantages to put six total goals on the board in the second tying the score at halftime, 7-7.
Greece brought the defensive effort to the third period, snuffing out four potential goals with field blocks to go along with two near misses off the goalpost from the United States' attackers. Greece scored three goals in the quarter to lead 10-7 headed to the final frame. In the fourth, the Greeks opened with two goals to push the lead to five. Daube, Bowen, and Hallock (twice) found the back of the net to cut the deficit four times but Greece responded each time to ultimately take the game by five, 16-11.
The United States went 4/10 on power plays and 0/1 on penalty shots while Greece went 6/8 on power plays and 2/2 on penalties.
