The LEN Champions League resumed action today as both VK-Jug and Pro Recco emerged victorious. First VK-Jug and
Alex Obert squared off against CC Ortigia from Italy. VK-Jug took control of the game early as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead before CC Ortigia then get on the board as VK-Jug took a 3-1 advantage at the end of the first. CC Ortigia struck first in the second to draw within one but Jug struck late twice as they took a 5-2 lead into halftime. CC Ortigia battled back to open the third as they closed the score to 5-4 but Obert drew an exclusion that led to a power play goal as Jug went back up 6-5. The teams then exchanged goals as VK-Jug took a 7-6 lead at the end of the third. VK-Jug then scored the only goal of the final quarter as they defeated CC Ortigia 8-6.
The final game of the day saw a match between Team USA teammates as Olympiacos with
Max Irving and
Hannes Daube squared off against Pro Recco and
Ben Hallock. Hallock features in the Champions League for Pro Recco and will not be playing in the Italian League because of a limit on foreign players. The first quarter was low scoring as Pro Recco were the only ones to score as they took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Pro Recco scored to open the second before Daube fired home a goal to get Olympiacos on the board to make it 2-1. Pro Recco responded though with two goals to go up 4-1 but then Irving got on the board for Olympiacos to make it 4-2. The teams then exchanged goals as Pro Recco took a 5-3 lead into halftime. Pro Recco then jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Olympiacos came storming back to make it 8-6 on another strike from Daube. Pro Recco responded with an 8-2 run as they took down Olympiacos 14-8 despite Daube scoring a third goal late on.
