Funchal, Portugal - September 10 - The USA Women's Junior National Team earned their first victory at the 2019 FINA Women's Junior World Championship with an 8-7 win over Hungary earlier today.
Jewel Roemer's power play goal with 46 seconds left secured the win for Team USA. Roemer and
Ryann Neushul led the offense with three goals each with
Georgia Phillips recording eight saves in net. Team USA now moves to 1-0-1 with a match against Australia on Wednesday to close out group play. Team USA and Australia will meet at 11am et/8am pt with live streaming available at

Hungary built an early lead taking a 2-0 advantage in the first before goals from
Jenna Flynn and
Ava Johnson tied things up for Team USA at 2-2 going to the second quarter. The United States kept the offensive attack going in the second on goals from Roemer and Neushul to cap a 4-0 run on the way to a 4-2 lead. Hungary quickly answered with two straight goals to tie the match at 4-4 with 4:09 left in the first half.
A similar scenario unfolded in the third quarter as goals from Roemer and Neushul gave Team USA a two-goal lead at 6-4 less than 90 seconds in the quarter. Hungary again answered with two straight goals to even the match at 6-6. Neushul scored a decisive power play goal with time winding down in the third to push the United States in front at 7-6 going to the fourth. Scoring dipped in the fourth with just two combined goals. Hungary leveled the match on a score with 3:20 left but Team USA had the answer. Roemer connected for her third goal of the match to secure the win.
