Maryland's MIAA boys' prep water polo championships are typically a limited affair. Only five prep schools make up the regular season league and two of them, Calvert Hall and Loyola Blakefield, have traditionally topped the rankings at season's end. This year McDonough upended the usual proceedings, dispatching 10-time champions Calvert Hall in the semifinals and threatening Loyola before falling in the title game by two goals.
Loyola Blakefield has now won three MIAA championships since the league started competing in 2000. They travel to Northern Virginia and The Naval Academy beginning Oct. 31 to participate in the prestigious Eastern Prep Championships, a tournament they won in 2013. More details to come.
