Stanford Remains In Charge Of Varsity Top 20

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The nation's best remain the same as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the Week 3/February 6 Women's Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, CWPA Division I/II Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five.

Stanford University (National Top 20), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III Top 10), Princeton University(CWPA Division I/II Top 10) and Grove City College (CWPA Division III Top Five), which concluded the 2012 season on top of their respective polls, continue to dominate the standings in the wake of limited action to date during the 2013 season.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2013 Women's Varsity National Top 20

The Cardinal of Stanford University continue a string of success dating back nearly three full seasons as the 2011 and 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) National Champions garnered 100 points to remain unchallenged at No. 1 in the 2013 Week 3/February 6 Women's Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

Overall, the first eight positions of the Top 20 remain unchanged from the Week 2 balloting as the University of Southern California (94 points), University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA, 91 points), University of California (85 points),Arizona State University (80 points,  University of California-Irvine (73 points), San Diego State University (71 points) and San Jose State University (63 points) remain locked in at No. 2-to-8, respectively.

The lone newcomer to the Top 10 pulls in at No. 9 as the University of Hawaii (61 points) creeps up two spots to force Princeton University (56 points) back to No. 10.

Hawaii's upward climb had a significant impact on the remainder of the Top 20 as the University of Michigan(51 points) slips back to No. 11.  Indiana University (42 points) fills the void left by the Wahine Warriors ascension by sliding up two places to take over at No. 12.

Due to both Hawaii and Indiana moving up, the University of California-Davis (37 points) and University of California-Santa Barbara (37 points) fall into a tie at No. 13.

Loyola Marymount University (29 points) holds at No. 15 for another week, with University of the Pacific (27 points) breaking out of a tie at No. 17 to claim sole possession of the No. 16 spot.

Hartwick College (17 points) replaces LMU in a tie with California State University-Northridge (17 points) at No. 17, while the University of California-San Diego (8 points) and Brown University (7 points) round out the Top 20.

2013 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges , which captured the 2012 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title, remains the best small college program in the nation as the Sagehens garnered 96 points to retain the No. 1 ranking in the Week 3/February 6 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10.

However, the Saghens, saw their lead over the rest of the field continue to stand on the razor's edge by a narrow one point margin.

The overall Top 10 remains unchanged from the January 30 voting as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (95 points) stays at No. 2 for another week, with Occidental College(92 points), the University of Redlands (85 points) and California Lutheran University(78 points) holding on to their positions in the Top Five.

Whittier College (74 points), Chapman University (71 points), University of La Verne (65 points), Grove City College (61 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (58 points) complete the ranked squads.

2013 Women's CWPA Division I/II Top 10

The 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Champion Tigers ofPrinceton University (97 points) continue at No. 1 in the Week 3/February 6 CWPA Division I/II Top 10 Poll.

Princeton, which defeated the University of Maryland 6-5 at Brown University's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center for the CWPA Eastern crown prior to placing sixth at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at San Diego State University, is coming off the program's second CWPA Eastern Championship after winning the 2000 title as well. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history as the national governing body did not sponsor a championship in the sport until 2001.

Princeton, which was a unanimous top pick in the preseason poll, saw its lead over the rest of the field shrink from six, to three points to a pair of points as preseason runner-up the University of Michigan (95 points) continues to stalk the Tigers.

Indiana University (92 points), Hartwick College (86 points) and Brown University (77 points) stay at No. 3-to-5, respectively, with Bucknell University (76 points), Harvard University (72 points), George Washington University (65 points), Mercyhurst University (60 points) and Gannon University (44 points) completing the Top 10.

Notre Dame College (11 points) also received votes.

2013 Women's CWPA Division III Top 5

The 2010, 2011 and 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Champion Wolverines of Grove City College remain the top selection as the No. 1 team in the Week 3/February 6 CWPA Division III Top Five Poll.

The No. 1 pick of the league's coaches for the 21st consecutive week, the Wolverines captured their third consecutive CWPA Division III crown at home in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool last season by upending Chatham University (19-2 W),Connecticut College (13-3 W) and Washington & Jefferson College (10-3 W).

However, the Wolverines have a pair of squads nipping at their heels in the race for CWPA Division III supremacy as Connecticut College (94 points) and Washington & Jefferson (93 points) are both within two points of upending the reigning league champion.

The lone change in the Top Five comes at No. 4 as Carthage College (86 points) edges out Macalester College (68 points) for the position.

Penn State Behrend College (16 points) and Utica College (16 points) also received votes as all seven teams in the league garnered at least 16 points.
