Stanford Maintains Top Spot In Varsity Top 20 Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The nation's best remain the same as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) releases the Week 2/January 30 Women's Varsity National Top 20, Division III Top 10, CWPA Division I/II Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five.

 

Stanford University (National Top 20), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (Division III Top 10), Princeton University(CWPA Division I/II Top 10) and Grove City College (CWPA Division III Top Five), which concluded the 2012 season on top of their respective polls, continue to dominate the standings in the wake of another limited weekend slate of games during the opening days of the 2013 season.

 

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2013 Women's Varsity National Top 20

The Cardinal of Stanford University continue a string of success dating back nearly three full seasons as the 2011 and 2012 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) National Champions garnered 100 points to remain unchallenged at No. 1 in the 2013 Week 2/January 30 Women's Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

 

Overall, the first seven positions of the Top 20 remain unchanged from the preseason and Week 1 balloting as the University of Southern California (95 points), University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA, 89 points), University of California (86 points),Arizona State University (81 points,  University of California-Irvine (74 points) andSan Diego State University (70 points) remain locked in at No. 2-to-7, respectively.

 

Loyola Marymount University, which was ranked No. 8 last week, drops out of the Top 10 to cause a dramatic shift in the remainder of the poll.

 

Due to LMU's drop, the remaining three spots in the Top 10 exchanged hands as San Jose State University(64 points) and Princeton University (57 points) jump up to No. 8 and 9, with the University of Michigan (50 points) staying at No. 10.

 

The changes continue over the remaining 10 spots in the poll as the University of Hawaii (48 points),University of California-Davis (44 points) and University of California-Santa Barbara (40 points) inched up to No. 11-to-13, with Indiana University (36 points) holding on at No. 14 for another week.

Loyola Marymount (32 points) sinks to No. 15, with Hartwick College (24 points) staying at No. 16.

 

California State University-Northridge (22 points)  and University of the Pacific (22 points) tie at No. 17, with the University of California-San Diego (11 points) and Brown University (4 points) rounding out the Top 20.

2013 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges , which captured the 2012 Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) title, remains the best small college program in the nation as the Sagehens garnered 97 points to retain the No. 1 ranking in the Week 2/January 30 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10.

 

However, the Saghens, saw their lead over the rest of the field shrink for the second week in a row as Pomona-Pitzer now holds a narrow one point margin of the rest of the field.

 

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (96 points) stays at No. 2 for another week, withOccidental College (90 points) sliding back to No. 3.

 

The University of Redlands (85 points), California Lutheran University (79 points) andWhittier College (74 points) remain at No. 4-to-6, with Chapman University (70 points) and University of La Verne (69 points) exchanging spots at No. 7 and 8 from the January 23 rankings.

 

Grove City College (47 points) and Washington & Jefferson College (34 points) hold on at No. 9-to-10 to complete the ranked squads.

 

Connecticut College (12 points), Macalester College (11 points) and Carthage College (11 points) round out 13 teams that received votes.

2013 Women's CWPA Division I/II Top 10

The 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Eastern Champion Tigers ofPrinceton University (98 points) continue at No. 1 in the Week 2/January 30 CWPA Division I/II Top 10 Poll.

 

Princeton, which defeated the University of Maryland 6-5 at Brown University's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center for the CWPA Eastern crown prior to placing sixth at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at San Diego State University, is coming off the program's second CWPA Eastern Championship after winning the 2000 title as well. The Tigers advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history as the national governing body did not sponsor a championship in the sport until 2001.

 

Princeton, which was a unanimous top pick in the preseason poll, saw its lead over the rest of the field shrink from six, to three points to a pair of points as preseason runner-up the University of Michigan (96 points) continues to close the gap.

 

Indiana University (91 points), Hartwick College (84 points) and Brown University (81 points) stay at No. 3-to-5, respectively, with Bucknell University (74 points), Harvard University (70 points), George Washington University (66 points), Mercyhurst University (60 points) and Gannon University (44 points) completing the Top 10.

 

Notre Dame College (11 points) also received votes.

2013 Women's CWPA Division III Top 5

The 2010, 2011 and 2012 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Champion Wolverines of Grove City College remain the top selection as the No. 1 team in the CWPA Division III Top Five Poll.

 

The No. 1 pick of the league's coaches for the 20th consecutive week, the Wolverines captured their third consecutive CWPA Division III crown at home in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool last season by upending Chatham University (19-2 W),Connecticut College (13-3 W) and Washington & Jefferson College (10-3 W).

 

The No. 2 team in the league is Connecticut College (92 points) as the Camels remain within striking distance of Grove City for the top spot.

 

Washington & Jefferson (86 points) hangs on at No. 3, with Macalester College (85 points) and Carthage College (77 points) staying at No. 4 and 5.

 

Penn State Behrend College (16 points) also received votes as six of the seven teams in the league garnered at least one point.
