Stanford Cardinal Stay Atop Varsity Top 20 Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- Stanford University, Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, the University of Michigan andGrove City College retain their No. 1 spots in the National Top 20, Division III Top 10, CWPA Division I/II Top 10 and CWPA Division III Top Five Polls as the April 25/Week 14 Women's Varsity National Polls were released by the CWPA league office.

 

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC), Big West Conference, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on each Wednesday during the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

 

2012 Women's Varsity National Top 20

Stanford University holds the No. 1 spot for a third week in a row as the Cardinal earned 100 points to rate as a unanimous top pick in the Week 14/April 25 Women's Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

 

Stanford, which held the No. 1 position from the preseason poll through the February 22 rankings, leads a Top 20 which saw minor changes all the way down the line.

 

The most significant change came at No. 2 as the University of California-Los Angeles (92 points) and University of Southern California (92 points) moved into a deadheat in the first runner-up position of the Top 20.

 

Positions No. 4-to-7 remain unchanged as the University of California (85 points), Arizona State University (82 points), University of California-Irvine (75 points) and Loyola Marymount University (71 points) held onto their previous rankings for another week.

 

Movement occurred in the backend of the Top 10 as San Diego State University (60 points) and San Jose State University (71 points) exchanged positions.  The University of California-Davis (55 points) returns to the Top 10 as the Aggies join the University of Michigan (55 points) at No. 10.

 

Indiana University (44 points), Princeton University (40 points) and the University of Maryland (33 points) stay at No. 12-to-14, respectively, with the University of Hawaii (27 points) and University of California-Santa Barbara (27 points) remaining tied at No. 15.

 

Hartwick College (26 points), California Baptist University (18 points), California State University-Northridge (8 points) and Iona College (7 points) complete the Top 20.

2012 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10

Another week, another No. 1 ranking for the Saghens of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges as the squad holds onto the No. 1 spot in the April 25 Women's Varsity Division III Top 10 poll.

 

The Top Five spots in the rankings remain unchanged as the University of Redlands (95 points), Occidental College (90 points), California Lutheran University (85 points) andClaremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (80 points) remain in their previous berths from the April 18 balloting of head coaches.

 

Change comes at No. 6 and 7 as Chapman University (69 points) and the University of La Verne (72 points) exchanging positions for the lone adjustment in the Top 10.

 

Whittier College (67 points), Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III champion Grove City College (62 points) and CWPA Division III runner-up Washington & Jefferson College (55 points) complete the Top 10.

2012 Women's CWPA Division I/II Top 10

The Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division champion Wolverines of the University of Michigan (99 points) hold on at No. 1 in the CWPA Division I/II Top 10 Poll for another week.

 

The Wolverines, who used victories over Notre Dame College,Indiana University and Hartwick College, to leapfrog overPrinceton University, Indiana, Hartwick and the University of Maryland and to take over as the top-ranked team in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Division I/II ranks last week, will have their position tested over the next several days at the 2012 CWPA Eastern Championship hosted by Brown University.

 

Princeton (94 points), which claimed the Southern Division title, holds at No. 2, with Indiana (88 points) and Hartwick (85 points) following at No. 3 and 4, respectively.

 

Maryland (84 points) stays at No. 4 as the Terrapins finished fourth at the Western Division tournament behind Michigan, Hartwick and Indiana.

 

Brown (73 points), which placed second at the Southern Division Championship, Harvard University (72 points), Bucknell University (65 points), George Washington University (60 points) and Mercyhurst University (55 points) stay at No. 6-to-10 as the poll is unchanged from the April 18 results.

2012 Women's CWPA Division III Top 5

Grove City College completes the 2012 season as a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in the Week 14/April 25 Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Division III Top Five Poll.

 

The No. 1 pick of the league's coaches for the 15th consecutive week dating back to the preseason balloting, the Wolverines captured their third consecutive CWPA Division III crown over the weekend at home in the James E. Longnecker Competition Pool by upending Chatham University (19-2 W), Connecticut College (13-3 W) and Washington & Jefferson College (10-3 W).

 

Due to the league championship over the weekend, the poll results reflect the final standings at the final event of the season for the nine CWPA Division III squads.

 

Washington & Jefferson (95 points), which advanced to its second straight league title game, finishes second in the poll, while Connecticut (90 points) jumps two spots to No. 3 in the wake of an 11-4 victory overWheaton College in the third place game.

 

Wheaton (85 points) slides to No. 4, while Macalester College (80 points) drops back to No. 5.
