USC Stays Atop Varsity Poll; Cal Moves Up To Fifth

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California remains the No. 1 team in the nation as the Trojans picked up 100 points to remain a unanimous top selection as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released the Week 8/October 24 Men's Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 Polls.

USC, which continues a reign of dominance that dates back to the 2011 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship Game, is the only team to retain a No. 1 ranking this week as the top team in both the Division III Top 10 and the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top Ten Polls changed from the Week 7/October 17 rankings.

Johns Hopkins University jumps one spot to the top position in the Division III poll, while Brown University ascends to No. 1 in the CWPA Top 10 poll.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2012 Men's Varsity National Top 20 (Week 8)

Another week, another No. 1 ranking for the Trojans of the University of Southern California as the squad continues as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country with 100 points to outdistance the field in the October 18/Week 8 Men's Varsity National Top 20 Poll.

 

The unanimous choice since claiming last season's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship, USC saw its lead shrink to five-points over the University of California-Los Angeles (95 points).

 

Nine of the Top Ten teams from the October 17 poll remain in the upper tier of the rankings as the University of California-Santa Barbara (90 points) andStanford University (83 points) stay at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, with theUniversity of California-Berkeley (81 points) rising two positions to No. 5.

Pepperdine University (74 points) moves up to No. 6, with University of the Pacific (71 points) and the

 

University of California-Irvine (68 points) dropping back to No. 7 and 8.

Long Beach State University (60 points) and University of California-San Diego (55 points) complete the Top 10.

 

Loyola Marymount University (50 points) drops out of the Top 10 to rate at No. 11, with Brown University (46 points) and the United States Air Force Academy (39 points) holding onto their previous rankings from last week.

 

The United States Naval Academy (33 points) and St. Francis College (33 points) remain tied at No. 14, whileBucknell University (18 points) and the University of California-Davis (18 points) move into a tie at No. 16.

 

Princeton University (17 points) slides to No. 18, with Santa Clara University (9 points) and California Baptist University (9 points) rounding out the Top 20 with a tie at No. 19.

 

Concordia University (6 points), Johns Hopkins University (1 point) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (1 point) were the only other teams to receive votes this week.

2012 Men's Varsity Division III Top 10 (Week 8)

A new team stands on top of the Division III rankings as Johns Hopkins Universityclaimed 98 points to edge out Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (92 points) for the No. 1 position in the Week 8/October 24 Division III Top 10.

 

Hopkins, which becomes the third team to top the Division III standings this season following Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, picked up all but one first place vote to improve one position following a weekend in which the Blue Jays claimed the Division III Eastern Championship.

 

Pomona-Pitzer joins JHU in moving up one position as the Sagehens inch up to No. 2, while Chapman University (88 points) rises to No. 3.

 

Former No. 1-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (84 points) drops to No. 4 in the wake of a 15-11 loss to California Lutheran University, while the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (80 points) moves up to No. 5.

 

California Lutheran (78 points), Whittier College (71 points), the University of Redlands (69 points) and University of La Verne (36 points) stand at No. 6-to-9, respectively, with Washington & Jefferson College (34 points) andConnecticut College (34 points) tying at No. 10.

2012 Men's Varsity CWPA Top 10 (Week 8)

The No. 1 position in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 rankings changes hands this week as Brown University (98 points) displaces the United States Naval Academy (97 points) in the October 24/Week 8 rankings.

 

Navy drops back to No. 2, while St. Francis College (89 points) stays at No. 3 for another week.

 

Princeton University (82 points) and Bucknell University (81 points) flip positions at No. 4 and 5, respectively, while Johns Hopkins University (78 points) clings to No. 6 for another week.

 

Mercyhurst University (67 points) is the biggest mover of the week jumping from unranked to No. 6 in the wake of a 3-0 New York campaign during which the Lakers defeated Harvard University, Iona College and Fordham University.

 

Behind the Lakers, George Washington University (66 points) inches up to No. 8, with Harvard (57 points) and theMassachusetts Institute of Technology (38 points) completing the Top 10.  Iona College (22 points) also received votes.
