USC Maintains Top Spot In Men's Varsity Top 20

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges, University of Redlands and United States Naval Academy top the national rankings as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released the 2011 Men's Varsity Week 1/September 7 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and CWPA Top 10 Polls.

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2011 Men's Varsity National Top 20

The University of Southern California continues its reign at No. 1 in the Week 1/September 7 Men's Varsity National Top 20 poll.

 

USC, which claimed the 2010 NCAA Championship with a 12-10 overtime victory against the University of California-Berkeley, garnered 99 points to remain on top of standings after previously ranking at No. 1 in the preseason balloting.

 

The Top Five in the poll remains unchanged as California (96 points), University of California-Los Angeles (90 points), Stanford University (84 points), and University of the Pacific (84 points) retained their positions from the preseason poll.

 

Positions No. 6-to-10 experienced dramatic change as the University of California-Santa Barbara (70 points) moved up one place to take over at No. 6, while Pepperdine University (68 points) jumped two spots to claim the No. 7 position.  The University of California-Irvine (67 points) slides two places to No. 8, while Long Beach State University (62 points) and Loyola Marymount University (58 points) round out the Top 10.

 

The University of California-Davis (48 points), University of California-San Diego (47 points), Concordia University (35 points) and Santa Clara University (31 points) complete an All-California Top 14 as the United States Naval Academy (29 points) is the first East Coast team to crack the Top 20.

Bucknell University (24 points), Princeton University (20 points), California Baptist University (16 points), St. Francis College (N.Y.) (14 points) and the United States Air Force Academy (11 points) complete the Top 20.

 

Brown University (4 points) and the University of Redlands (1 point) were the sole other teams to receive votes in the rankings.

2011 Men's Varsity Division III Top 10

The best Division III team in the country becomes plural this week as the University of Redlands joins Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at No. 1 team in the Week 1/September 7 Men's  Varsity Division III Poll.

 

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which ranked at No. 1 in the preseason, held onto  its  position by tying Redlands with 96 points as the two programs share the top-ranking.

 

Johns Hopkins University (91 points) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (83 points) hold on at No. 3 and 4, respectively, while California Lutheran University (79 points) jumps up to No. 5 after ranking at No. 7 in the Preseason Poll.

 

Whittier College (75 points), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (70 points), Chapman University (64 points), Occidental College (52 points) and University of La Verne (45 points) complete the Top 10.

 

Washington & Jefferson College (11 points) also received votes in this week's poll.

2011 Men's Varsity CWPA Top 10

The United States Naval Academy, thanks to a victory over previously No. 1-ranked St. Francis College (N.Y.) during the Navy Labor Day Open, assumes the top position in the Week1/September 7 Men's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 Poll.

 

St. Francis' loss to Navy combined with a defeat at the hands of Bucknell University moves the Terriers back to No. 4 in the poll with 82 points as Navy (98 points), Bucknell (93 points) and Princeton University (91 points) stand at No. 1-to-3.

 

Brown University (82 points) and Johns Hopkins University (80 points) drop back to No. 5 and 6, respectively, as Bucknell broke into the Top Five at No. 2 after ranking sixth in the preseason balloting.

 

Harvard University (68 points), which received votes in the Preseason Poll, improves to No. 7, while George Washington University (65 points),Mercyhurst College (63 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (34 points) complete the Top 10.
