USC & UCLA Tied Atop Men's Varsity Top 20

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California-Los Angeles and University of Southern California, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and theUnited States Naval Academy top the national rankings as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released the 2011 Men's Varsity Week 10/November 9 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and CWPA Top 10 Polls.

 

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2011 Men's Varsity National Top 20

The No. 1 team in the nation is now plural as the University of Southern California picked up 97 points to tie the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) for the top spot in the Week 10/November 9 Men's Varsity National Top 20 poll.

 

It marks the first time two teams have been tied at No. 1 in the Men's Varsity Top 20 since December 2, 2009 when USC and UCLA shared the top spot.

 

The remainder of the Top 10 continues relatively unchanged as the University of California-Berkeley (90 points) and Stanford University (86 points) hold at No. 3 and 4, respectively. Another tie occurs at No. 5 as the University of California-Irvine (75 points) improves one position to tie with the University of California-Santa Barbara (75 points).

 

At the final three positions in the Top 10, University of the Pacific (72 points) jumps past Long Beach State University (67 points) to take over at No. 8, while Loyola Marymount University (55 points) rounds out the final spot in the top half of the rankings.

 

Positions No. 11-14 also remain consistent as the University of California-San Diego (50 points), University of California-Davis (44 points),Concordia University (40 points) and Santa Clara University (31 points) hold on for another week.

 

The biggest mover of the week is St. Francis College (28 points) which improves from No. 20 to 15.  The United States Naval Academy (26 points),Brown University (19 points) and California Baptist University (16 points) remain at No. 16-18, respectively, with Princeton University (15 points) and the United States Air Force Academy (5 points) completing the poll.

2011 Men's Varsity Division III Top 10

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges continues in the top position as the squad picked up 98 points in the Week 10/November 9 Men's Varsity Division III National Top 10 poll.

 

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (96 points) moves to No. 2, an improvement of two places, with the University of Redlands(87 points) and California Lutheran University (84 points) remaining in the Top Five at No. 3 and 4, respectively.

 

Johns Hopkins University (81 points), Chapman University (78 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (67 points) hold at No. 5-to-7 for another week, with Whittier College (66 points), Occidental College(57 points) and University of La Verne (50 points) exchanging the final three spots in the Top 10.

2011 Men's Varsity CWPA Top 10

The Northern and Southern Division Championship caused a shakeup in the Collegiate Water Polo Association league rankings this week as the Southern Division champion United States Naval Academy Midshipmen garnered 95 points to edge out former No. 1 ranked and Northern Division champion St. Francis College (94 points) in the Week 10/November 9 Men's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10.

 

Due to Navy moving up from No. 4 to No. 1, the poll underwent a dramatic shift as Brown University (92 points) andPrinceton University (87 points), which finished as the Northern and Southern Divsion runner-ups, drop to No. 3 and 4.

 

Bucknell University (81 points) and Johns Hopkins University (74 points) stand firm at No, 5 and 6, with Iona College (72 points) inching up to No. 7.

 

The biggest movement of the week belongs to Harvard University (63 points) which goes from "receiving votes" to No. 8, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (47 points) and George Washington University (37 points) completing the poll.
