UCLA Maintains Top Spot In Men's Varsity Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of California-Los Angeles, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges and St. Francis College (N.Y.) top the national rankings as the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) released the 2011 Men's Varsity Week 9/November 2 National Top 20, Division III Top 10 and CWPA Top 10 Polls.

 

Voted on by a panel of coaches from the CWPA, Western Water Polo Association (WWPA), Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF), Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), the polls are compiled and released on Wednesday during each week of the season through the week following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

2011 Men's Varsity National Top 20

The University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) remains at No. 1 in the Week 9/November 2 Men's Varsity National Top 20 poll as the Bruins garnered 97 points.

 

All the teams in the Top 10 remain in the top portion of the poll for another week with some movement among the nation's elite programs.

 

The University of Southern California (96 points) remains at No. 2 and inches closer to tying or taking over the top position from the Bruins by closing the gap between the two programs to only one point.  University of California (90 points) and Stanford University (88 points) trade the No. 3 and 4 spots, while the University of California-Santa Barbara (80 points) hangs on at No. 5 for another week.

 

The final five berths in the Top 10 experienced dramatic change as University of California-Irvine (75  points) and Long Beach State University (67 points) rise to No. 6 and 7, respectively, after ranking at No. 8 and 9 last week.  University of the Pacific (66 points) and Pepperdine University (62 points) slide to No. 8 and 9, while Loyola Marymount University (56 points) remains glued to the No. 10 position.

 

University of California-San Diego (50 points), University of California-Davis (42 points) and Concordia University (41 points) stay at No. 11-13, withSanta Clara University (31 points) climbing to No. 14.

 

Princeton University (26 points), the United States Naval Academy (23 points), Brown University (18 points), California Baptist University (17 points),Bucknell University (16 points) and St. Francis College (16 points) complete the Top 20.

 

The United States Air Force Academy (4 points), Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (1 point) and University of Redlands (1 point) conclude the teams receiving votes.

2011 Men's Varsity Division III Top 10

The Division III ranks remain relatively consistent as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges continues in the top position as the squad picked up 98 points in the Week 9/November 2 Men's Varsity Division III National Top 10 poll.

 

The first change in the poll occurs at No. 2 as California Lutheran University (95 points) moves up one place and drop the University of Redlands (89 points) back to No. 3.

 

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (87 points) and Johns Hopkins University (78 points) complete the Top Five for another week as the Sagehens and Blue Jays hold on at No. 4 and 5 in the poll.

 

Chapman University (77 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (69 points) stay at No. 6 and 7, respectively, while the University of La Verne (66 points) moves up from No. 10 to No. 8.

Occidental College (60 points) and Whittier College (56 points) complete the Top 10.

2011 Men's Varsity CWPA Top 10

In the wake of a 16-5 victory by Brown University over former No. 1 Princeton University, St. Francis College (N.Y.) terminates the Tigers' reign as the Terriers take over at No. 1 in the Week 9/November 2 Men's Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10.

 

St. Francis, which enters this weekend's Northern Division Championship as the No. 1 seed in the tournament, picks up 94 points to edge out Northern Division No. 2 seed Brown (93 points) as both teams climb-up to the top spots after tying at No. 4 last week.

 

Princeton (92 points) drops to No. 3, with the United States Naval Academy (86 points) and Bucknell University (84 points) moving back to No. 4 and 5, respectively.

Johns Hopkins University (71 points) and George Washington University (71 points) are tied at No. 6, with Iona College (67 points), Fordham University (59 points) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (36 points) completing the poll.

 

Harvard University (22 points) continues to rank just outside the Top 10.
