USA Men Claim Fourth Place At FINA World Cup

Oradea, Romania - August 1 - The USA Men's National Team claimed fourth place at the FINA World Cup following a 12-8 loss to Spain on the final day of play. Jeff Powers (San Luis Obispo, CA/Newport WPF) scored two goals for Team USA as they conclude their major competition for 2010.

Spain controlled the action early getting out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter before Tommy Corcoran (Coronado, CA/Olympic Club) got on the board for the United States to make it 3-1 going to the second. In the second period Spain went up again by three goals at 4-1 before the United States started to battle back. Team USA closed to within a goal at 5-4 at the 3:13 mark thanks to a score from Jesse Smith (Coronado, CA/NYAC). Spain would add one last goal in the period to lead 6-4 at halftime.

It was back to a one goal game in the third quarter when Powers delivered at the 3:51 mark but Spain countered again with two straight goals to lead 8-5 as played moved to the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter Spain kept up their offensive attack leading 10-6 with 5:18 remaining. The United States looked to stage one last rally closing to 10-8 on a goal from Ryan Bailey (Long Beach, CA/Newport WPF) with 3:32 to go in the match. That would be all in the comeback department however as Spain then scored two straight goals to close out the match for the victory at 12-8.
