Stanford Remains Atop The Men's Collegiate Varsity Poll

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. (Sept. 30, 2009)-- Stanford University, Johns Hopkins University and the United States Naval Academy continued their dominance in the polls as the three programs were voted No. 1 in the Men's Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Top 10 polls released on September 30. It marks Stanford's second week at No. 1, while JHU has ranked a top the Division III poll for eight weeks.

Voted on by a panel of coaches and administrators from around the country during each week of the season and based on the cumulative results of each team, the Varsity Top 20, Division III Top 10 and Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 polls are released each Wednesday during the season until the Wednesday following the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

Men's Top 20 Varsity Poll

Stanford University held onto the No. 1 ranking in the country for a second week as the Cardinal earned 100 points to once again rate as the unanimous top team in the country.

The Top Six positions in the poll remain unchanged from last week as University of California-Los Angeles, University of Southern California, University of California, Loyola Marymount University and University of California-Santa Barbara held onto their rankings at No. 2-6, respectively.

Long Beach State University moved up two places to No.  7 this week, while Pepperdine University jumped one spot to No. 8 and University of California-Irvine dropped back to No. 9.

The United States Naval Academy moved back into the Top 10 at No. 10, while Santa Clara University, University of California-Davis, University of California-San Diego, Concordia University (Calif.) and the United States Air Force Academy round out the Top 15 teams.

University of the Pacific held on at No. 16 for another week, while St. Francis College (NY) ascended to No. 17.  Bucknell University, which was unranked last week, moves into the Top 20 at No. 18 with Princeton University and California Baptist University completing the poll.

Overall, 19 of the 20 teams in last week's poll remained in the September 28 balloting as only Johns Hopkins University, which was No. 20 last week, dropped out of the Top 20.

Men's Division III Top 10 Varsity Poll

Johns Hopkins University remains No. 1 in the Division III Top 10 poll as the Blue Jays received 99 points to outdistance University of Redlands and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges for another week.

The top four positions in the poll remain unchanged from the September 23 balloting as Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges held on at No. 2-4, respectively, while Whittier College and California Lutheran University traded positions to rank fifth and sixth this week for the only change in the Top 10.

Chapman University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Occidental College and University of La Verne stayed at No. 7-10, while Washington & Jefferson College garnered votes after being unranked last week.

Men's Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 10 Poll

The United States Naval Academy retains the No. 1 ranking in the Collegiate Water Polo Association for a third week as the Midshipmen garnered 100 points to once again rate as the unanimous top selection in the league poll.

Bucknell University, which knocked off George Washington University (14-7 W), Princeton University (10-9 W) and Johns Hopkins University (10-9 W) over the weekend, moved up to No. 2 this week to surpass Princeton, Brown University and JHU.

Princeton slipped to No. 3, while Brown and JHU are tied at No. 4 to account for the Top 5 teams in the CWPA.

Fordham University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology held at No. 6 and 7 this week with Iona College, George Washington and Harvard University completing the Top 10 poll.
