BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- University of California-Los Angeles and California Lutheran University conclude the year as the No. 1 teams in the May 13 Varsity Top 20 and Division III Top 10 polls as the Bruins and Regals garnered 100 and 99 points, respectively.
In the Top 20 poll, the Bruins top the nation once again as UCLA moved up from the No. 3 position to finish as the No. 1 team in the country after knocking off former No.1 University of Southern California 5-4 to win the 2009 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship at the University of Maryland's Eppley Recreation Center Natatorium on May 10.
The ranking marks the first time the Bruins have held the No. 1 position since the final poll of the 2008 season, a year in which UCLA became the first team to go wire-to-wire as the No. 1 team in the country.
USC drops to No. 2, while Stanford University, which finished third at the NCAA Championship, slips back one position to No. 3.
University of Hawaii, University of California and San Jose State University held their positions at No. 4-6, while University of Michigan jumped four spots to No. 7, a new high for an East Coast team, in the final poll after ranking No. 11 last week and finishing fifth at the NCAA Championship.
Michigan's improvement changes the backend of the Top 10 as San Diego State University and University of California-Irvine drop to No. 8 and 9, respectively, while Arizona State University retained the No. 10 position.
Loyola Marymount, which dropped an 11-7 decision to Michigan in the fifth place game, fell to No. 11, while University of California-Davis, Hartwick College, California State University-Northridge and University of California-Santa Barbara account for the No. 12-15 positions.
The final five slots in the poll remain unchanged from the May 6 poll as Long Beach State University, Santa Clara University, University of Maryland, California State University-Bakersfield and Brown University rank No. 16-20, with Marist College receiving votes.
