USC Stays In Top Spot; UC Irvine Jumps To Eighth

BRIDGEPORT, Pa. -- The University of Southern California retained the No. 1 ranking in the nation this week as the Trojans top the April 29 National Varsity Top 20 Poll. California Lutheran University held onto the No. 1 ranking in the Division III poll, and University of Michigan retook the top ranking in the final CWPA poll of the season.

USC, which reclaimed the top ranking last week to snap an eight week run by Stanford University as the top team in the nation and put the Trojans in the top position for the first time since the February 25 poll, is a unanimous No. 1 selection.

The top seven positions in the poll are unchanged this week as Stanford, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Hawaii, University of California, San Jose State University and San Diego State University held firm at No. 2-7.

University of California-Irvine moved up to No. 8, Loyola Marymount University jumped to No, 9, Arizona State University slipped to No. 10, University of Michigan inched up to No. 11, University of California-Davis fell to No. 12, while California State University-Northridge and Hartwick College remained at No. 13 and 14, respectively.

University of California-Santa Barbara and Long Beach State University rose to No. 17 and 18, Santa Clara University moved into the Top 20 at No. 17, University of Maryland moved to No. 18, California State University-Bakersfield slipped to No. 19 and Brown dropped to No. 20 to round out the poll.

California Lutheran University, which claimed the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title last week to earn a bid to the NCAA Championship tournament, remained the No. 1 team in the Division III poll for another week.

Pomona-Pitzer Colleges, Occidental College, University of California-Santa Cruz and University of Redlands remain at No. 2-5, while Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges jumped to No. 6 with Chapman College, Whittier College, Washington & Jefferson College and California State University-East Bay wrapping up the top 10 selections.

In the final Collegiate Water Polo Association poll of the year, University of Michigan regained the No. 1 ranking as the Wolverines knocked off No. 2 Hartwick College 12-6 last week to capture the 2009 Eastern Championship at Harvard University's Blodgett Natatorium.

Overall, the final Eastern standings mirror the top eight positions in the CWPA poll as University of Maryland, Brown University, Indiana University, Princeton University, Harvard University and Bucknell University account for positions No. 3-8.  George Washington University and Gannon University round out the poll at No. 9 and 10, respectively.
